My favourite resource for all things ‘investments’ is investopedia, and their article “10 Steps to a Career in Hedge Funds” caught my eye as something that would be very valuable to the TalentEgg community.
By Matt Faust - November 6, 2008 - 0 CommentsI had graduated from Dalhousie University in 2006 with a degree in International Development Studies and as soon as I got home, I began looking for a job. I wanted a job that would draw on not only my academic accomplishments, but my extra curricular ones as well. I had traveled extensively in the past four years, had some sales experience in the summer, but it wasn’t that easy to just plug into a job board and sift through the advertisements. I was using craigslist, Monster, workopolis and the like but I had little success because they were just general advertisements directed towards people with all kinds of experience, rarely for some with just a university degree. I knew going to university was an asset in itself but I felt like that wasn’t the only thing I could offer.
By Cassandra Jowett - October 29, 2008 - 0 CommentsFor students who choose what are considered not-so-serious undergraduate programs to study – often anything that doesn’t fall under the sciences, business or engineering – the thought of getting a career in your chosen field after graduation can seem like the equivalent to wanting to be a rock star. Or the next Shakespeare, Monet, Barbara Walters or Steven Spielberg.

I just recently came across this article by Seth Godin and it started me thinking. What does a resume actually accomplish? Not much it turns out. Seth is writing from the employer’s side of things but I see it from the job seekers view. If you can create a perfect resume and are a fantastic interviewee, what have you shown your potential employer?
By Lauren Friese - October 15, 2008 - 0 CommentsTo be honest, I fell into my Economics major as an undergrad. Knowing that I didn't want to study business, I took a wide-range of courses in my first year (from Film, to Canadian History, to Economics). I even toyed with a double major in Economics and Politics for my first two years, but in the end, Economics won... Was it the right choice?

By Lauren Friese - September 24, 2008 - 0 CommentsInvestopedia is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in finance. The best feature on the site is, hands down, the comprehensive ‘Finance dictionary’. You can search almost any finance-related term and it will give you a) a definition that is in context and b) ‘Investopedia says’, which is usually an example of how that word might be used in practice.
By Sarah Lasch - September 24, 2008 - 1 CommentsI have an MA degree in Communication and Culture. This is undoubtedly something that I am quite proud of. However, I am applying to entry to mid-level positions in the media and an MA is never a requirement. My parents always told me that school was for learning. University, specifically, was a place to learn about anything you've ever been interested in or wanted to know more about. As a result, I grew up with the belief that university wasn't meant to get me a job, university was intended to educate me. And educated I got. I did an honours degree in Political..... When I was in university, I was so wrapped up in my school-life that I often left my summer plans to the very last minute. The result being that I had some very diverse summer experiences, including working in retail, interning at a bank, helping out at a family office, and being a hostess at a popular Toronto restaurant/bar.
